ClickerTraining: Shaping a dog to retrieve (by Honey the Great Dane)

www.bighoneydog.com / Honey the Great Dane demonstrates how you can use clicker training to shape a formal Obedience retrieve in 3 minutes! This method is especially good if you have a dog that is reluctant to retrieve things or will not Sit, hold it and ‘present’ it to you…it also helps to increase a dog’s speed and enthusiasm when going out on the retrieve. Clicker training is all positive and reward-based, creating a dog that is eager and focused on working for you and enabling you to train anything with no physical force or handling…the DOG works out what he needs to do to earn the rewards and performs the actions voluntarily and eagerly. Everyone is happy! (Does require some patience and good timing…)

  • awesome!!!

  • @linzhenlong – Glad to have helped. I tried to approve your Video Response but it doesn’t seem to be going through – I don’t know why!

  • Hi, I just added my cat’s retrieve. You helped me ages ago with this video, so THANKS!

  • You sound like you’re doing all the right things – remember, every dog is different and what one dog might learn fast, another might take ages to pick up but try a different trick and the 2 dogs could be the opposite. There is no right or wrong time – just work at your dog’s pace. Dogs also pick up tricks that use their “favourite action” quicker – eg, Honey picks up all paw tricks very fast (I never even had to teach her to shake) – but some other dogs can take ages just to learn to give paw.

  • Yes, she does retrieve balls if you throw them but this was the first time picking up a glove from the floor. Everytime you introduce a new object, it can be like a new thing to your dog. It’s not so much that she knows the retrieve – it’s more that she is very “clicker aware” and so knows she has to keep trying out different actions to get the click – this is what makes for a fast result in shaping – how “clicker savvy” a dog is.

  • Hey, that dog already looks like it knows the retrieve. That was not your first session shaping the retrieve, was it? It’s already been a few days for my dog and she’s just starting to sometimes pick up the item – maybe one out of ten times. I click and treat for all touches, and jackpot the pick up. It’s moving slowly, but moving nonetheless.

  • I just love how Honey wants to work. You have done an amazing job with her! She is BEAUTIFUL!! I also love your freestyle videos. I am new to freestyle, but I LOVE IT!

  • Lovely & smart gal! :)
    Thanks for uploading this.

  • Did you accomplish the training of retrieving in just one training section?!?! Amazing dog! I spent one week to shiba inu retreiving. It’s so hard to train a dog when his motivation is only towarding to sex.

  • What a cutie! She sure is a fast moving great dane! :) Obviously an experienced dog at free shaping and loving it! So nice to see… :)

  • Great job, Honey! Clicker training rocks :D

  • She’s so smart! I love clicker training it’s a blast! My little girl has learned a relaxed walk as well as to target my hand with her nose! I’m working on down right now and it’s taking a little longer than II expected but she’ll get it! Can’t wait for more honey videos!

  • Oh Honey! Momma was laughing at you! She said the look on your face the first time your mom threw the glove was priceless, plus you doing paw when she wanted you to keep chasing the bloody thing. I fear that some people might try that with me now!
You don’t slobber too much when you train (not like me).

    Slobbers,
    Mango

  • Great job Honey…

  • Brava Dane!
