Have 19 month shih tzu male, neutered @ 6 mos., 7 weeks when I got him.
Pee pads in every room to start. Took him to pad or same place outside every hour PLUS immediately every time he woke up PLUS within 10 minutes after he ate PLUS within 10 minutes after every playtime. NEVER gave free run of house til he was a year old. When left alone he was ALWAYS in small confined area (portable pen) w/pee pad even outdoors. Not one accident. Since 6 months he barks at door or goes to pad alone.

Shih Tzus are notorious for being difficult to house train. You MAY be able to train him or her, but there may still be that 5% of the time when your dog goes in the house. My shih tzu’s 6 years old, and by 3, she still peed once in the house at least every week, if not twice a week, despite us having our own yard to let her out in. I suggest settling for a litter box with a doggy pee pad. It worked for us
Especially if you live in an apartment…

maybe he doesn’t KNOW how to tell you he has to go. every time you are going to take him out say “outside” and before opening the door show him to scratch it. never pick him up to bring him, then he would think that’s how he will be taken out.
signs he needs to go is sniffing around and/or circling an area. on a feeding schedule youll get an idea of when he will go, usually 5-30 minute after they eat. a walk after each feeding would be great but if you cannot pull that off then just watch him.

@kwlie you know i’m a little old skool and i have three dogs all potty trained and have had many through my life. wenever i’ve had a problem with potty training i always resort to a good slap on the rump. some people may think this is wrong or cruel but it is not hard enough to harm them. i still love them and sometimes apologize after but just hard enough to make them remember. lol believe me it works. they are not on the same intelectual level as us so sometimes words don’t work. gntle but frm

My Shi Tzu Is 1 Years Old And Hes Still Not Toilet Trained Its Really Ennoyin i Have Been Really Trying To Train Him But i Think Hes Just To Lazy To Listen To Me He Runs Behind The Couch When i Shout at Him For Goin Toilet On The Floor And i Always Bring Him To The Back Garden And i Bring Him Every 30 Minutes To The Same Spot And I Give Him Alot Of Praise When i Bring Him But He Still Gos On The Floor In The House

What I do with my shih tzu is stay outside with him for 20 to 30 minutesThen he has anough time to got to the restroom!

I have a 4 yr old ShihTzu who is still piddling in the house. Even when I leave the doors open for him to freely amble outside, he’ll still piddles indoors. I’m at my wits end, PLEASE, PLEASE, ANYONE GOT ANY HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS?

They are, Chinese royalty bred them however the Japanese imperials and the rebel Chinese killed them and use them as coats. But few Japanese men took them home and bred them, and few English men took some and bred them. All shih tzus in the world are traced back all to the same 14 original ancestors. Mine so happens to be Tibetan.

they can get pregnant at 8years, but it might be some problems with the birth if they haven’t been through it before.

My Shih Tzu will not eat dog food. Ever since the first day we got him. I tried the old “he’ll eat when hes hungry enough” thing by just leaving his food out. But he went days without eating! We brought him to the vet, and he said we better feed him something or else! So he eats people food. Over the years we tried to get him on dog food, but it was the same story everytime!
Other than that, hes a great dog!

a have a shih tzu, a japanese shih tzu..
nor i trained her how to shake hands with me using hand signs.. she was easy to train. What can be the next trick i can teach her?

is 12 hours too much for a shih tzu not to go outside and pee? i overslept this morning and took him out at 11am (i took him out around 10-11pm last night), and i see no signs of him peen inside the house. or am i foolin myself lol? someone let me know, thanx!

We found a shih tzu on our backyard not too long ago. Little guy was clearly neglected. 18 months old never been groomed in his entire life, never been house broken.
So we’ve got one of those plastic playpens for him where we put him and his litter box when he has an accident. If he uses his litter box or goes outside he gets a treat. We’re down to 1-2 accidents a day comparing to the 10 when we first got him. He mostly uses that litter boxthough, which is fine with us.
