  • It can help at times. In the U.S. only service animals can ride the bus, go into the grocery store, etc. but having the CGC can open some doors depending on the type of business and the proprietor. For example: some dog parks require CGC. It is also a first step towards therapy dog work.

Unfortunately, some certified CGC testers hand out certifications like candy which waters down the meaning of the certification for dogs/owners that have truly earned it.

  • fairy4angel, yes, your dog has every chance in the world provided you educate yourself and take the proper steps. Your dog can pass without a doubt; moreover, higher energy dogs tend to perform better in many ways than mellower dogs.

Older, extremely high energy dogs with many, severe behavioral problems can end up with their CGC and more- providing the owner steps up to the plate.

  • what do u get if u pass? can you bring ur dog into stores and stuff then? any advantages? or just bragging rights?

  • very nice Eric….papers for bragging rights…..

  • This sounds a lot like Schutzuhnd except it’s a little less rigorous.

  • yes

  • This might sound like an odd question but can “overly-active” dogs pass? I have a Collie X and she’s natural very excited to learn. She knows when’s she’s done a good job and likes to stand up and wag her tail, to put it simply…. she’s not a mellow dog.

Would she have a chance (she is very well trained, even off leash walking, she’s simply very excitable)?

  • thank you for this video now that i know what to work on that helps a lot cause our 4 month old collie is very easy to train but i would like her to be better since we will be showing her and this video helps a lot

    thank you

  • do you all know that the American Kennel Club gets around 80% of their revenue from Puppy Mills? That’s just a conservative researched estimate. If you love your dog, let them know you are upset by this and you don’t support animal abuse.

  • Great video. You are awesome! Thanks for all the helpful advice.

  • to be cgc, does he hae to pass all parts of the test?

  • I am glad you have like this video..

I would like to ask about my new dog 10 month old belgian sheperd. Im very worried about my dog because when we have a walk one morning she tuck her tail when we are on the street and she is very aggresive like ahe want to be unleash and run away..
what should I do about this kind of behavior?

  • I’m using clicker training and would love to pass the CGC within the next 6 months or so. Got any tips on practicing meeting new dogs and controlling the exctited jumping? (7 month old Golden retriever)

  • awesome, thanks, i always did wonder what the canin good citizen’s award was when i herd of people mentioning their dog had. sounds pretty tough, but something like that a dog and owner should have a certificate to brag about. haha

  • Glad you like the video. That’s great that the test is going to Canada. It really is an excellent program.

Here in the States you are not allowed to use treats during the test. As for the whining you can gradually practice this part of the test. It is just a matter of building up your dog’s tolerance to being away from you.

    Good luck,
    Eric

  • I am so glad you made this video. A CGN (Canine Good Neighbour [Canada]) test is coming up and I would like to try and get it for my dog, Mickey.

Are you allowed to use treats? One of the main parts I am worried about is when we have to leave the room. Mickey whines when I leave him in a strange place.

  • first to comment!
