@Fearmeforiamdeath I agree…I was always hesitant to get an older dog. But we had the opportunity to adopt a year and a half old GSP from someone I knew and couldnt pass up the opportunity. I am so glad we did not, the dog never hunted but his natural instincts were amazing. He has also been the easiest dog to train, everything has gone very smoothly. Youre right he may never be a master hunter, but a great hunting companion and has changed my life.

Ultimatly, we train to have a dog that we know will hold point on his birds to flush or to release from the handler. The dogs are collar conditioned to whoa by the time we have completed this training and will respond to that even from a distance. Hope this answers your question. so, will you be able to stop this dog at a distance with just the vibration, no verbal whoa? say the dog gets out of range and birds are flying and he’s chasing them out of the county, will you be able to stop the dog with the vibration with that much distraction and lack of focus on the handler?

Picking up a Year and a Half old dog is an ultimately VERY risky thing to do.
I hope it works out for you… but, unless this dog is use to training it will take quite a while to break. Also it it very easy for a dog that age to have negative experiences with humans ie. abuse.
hopefully the previous owners are hunters or trainers.

Yes, you can use a light stimulation, although we prefer to use a vibrate or a tone to avoid correction for most of our negative reinforcement.

If you don’t have a collar that vibrates can you use a low level of stimulation instead?

Again Thank you for taking the time to share…I have been having trouble teaching my GSP Roxy the whoa command…But i see know that its my fault she was not learning correctly…
