They are known to cause cataracts if the spray gets in their eyes often. I will post a good site to help you conquer the barking, if you will check back in a few minutes.
Here is a great training site that will work much better than a gadget> http://www.clickersolutions.com/articles/2001c/manicbarking.htm

Normally a dog is a barker due to lack of socialization. Their bored of frustrated or they dont get out much. Try taking hime to a bark park or getting him into a training class to challenge him. You should see a big difference in the attitude as well as the barking

I personally have not, but have a friend who is a vet tech at an animal hospital in TN. She said they use them there with great results. The collars don’t cause any skin reactions, and the dogs are much calmer according to her.

Hi. We have a chinese crested who barks like a beast at night when he is in his kennel. We have used the ultrasonic ones that give off a silent sound only audible to the dog. We have also used the citronella ones like you are asking about. I saw NO difference in my dog’s barking. He is only a small chinese crested and they did not work on him, so I would imagine you would have a similar experience if you have an even larger dog. I would say, don’t waste your money. If he is a really bad barker, the shock (I know Peta lovers….shock!!) collars work well. We got one at Walmart for about $40 and it has silenced him and we use it at the absolute lowest level. You can also try ebay…they make some nice ones for a very reasonable price. Good luck and I hope this helps. Hope you find something that quiets your home.

Look up a bark collar called JETAIR.
Citronella is toxic.
