Training Collar Guide: Pick the training collar that best suits your pet

Have you tried the spray bark collar on your dog?

i can’t even let my dog outside anymore because the neighbors dog lives outside and my dog and her will bark non stop at each other. I don’t want to have to hurt my dog to get him to stop but it sucks that i live in a beautiful climate and can never let my dog hang out outside.

  • If you have a persistent barker & traditional training methods like taking the dogs outside on a long lead & giving it a quick, hard collar correction on a prong have failed to snap its attention back to you, then if it was my dog I would invest in a decent no bark collar from Dogtra & not a citrus collar.

I was advised by a behaviorist to try a citronella collar on one of my previous dogs who barked at dogs, but the level of correction was too soft & so was not a negative consequence that my dog instinctively wanted to avoid by obeying a command.

  • Is your yard fenced? If so, be outside doing things with your dog, so that way your dog won’t be so bored as to bark nonstop.

  • Why ..NO!
Since I’m not a weak gullible sucker,I don’t fall for stupid useless gimmicks.
    I’ve used REAL & effective bark-collars.
They TEACH dogs to SHUDDUP……thus saving their homes…& even LIVES!
    Buy a real one…USE it.

  • Why can’t your dog be outside? Train it to not bark, simple solution. If the neighbor’s dog is barking so much, why not call your local code enforcement department? You can make an anonymous complaint.

  • Dogs bark at each other. Is there a fence around the yard? Is it aggressive barking or just noisy barking? If it’s a fenced yard, go out there with your dog and play or let him go outside and bark at teh other dog. They will get bored after a little while and stop. You can also try this which would work on your neighbors dog as well. no collar required. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3307+18168+18896&pcatid=18896

  • Well I would suggest doing some basic obedience training with him first.

But if you REALLY have to get a bark collar – my sister uses the citrus spray one on her dog and it works. Now she just has to show her the collar and she will stop barking – if she continues barking she puts the collar on and she won’t even dare to bark lol.

  • I did buy the citronella bark collar, and it does work if you use it properly. Unfortunately, that means not leaving your dog unattended with it on. You have to be there when it sprays them, so you can correct the behavior. The dog barks, then they get sprayed in the face- your job is to say, "quiet" while they’re startled by the spray, and reward them when they stay quiet. My dog was sitting by my window sill and barking at everyone and every thing in sight. After about 2-3 weeks, I’ve noticed a huge difference. Now he just looks and wags his tail when he sees something. I say, "good quiet" and give him a treat… I hardly even use the collar anymore! Also, it doesn’t hurt them at all, just startles them a bit, and gets their attention. It won’t train your dog for you, but I think it’s an effective tool to use if used properly.

  • I haven’t personally, but others I know have said that their dogs learned to bark all the citrus spray out of the collar then barked some more.
