How can you stop a Jack Russell from digging up your yard?
jakslap asked:
When I catch him, he stops, but only temporarily. He has no urge to please. He responds to a training collar (shock), but I do not like to do that unless it’s an emergency (like attacking another dog at a dog-park, etc). So, part two of the question…is there a stimulating game I can teach a dog with no urge to please? Thanks!

I think the shock collar is a better idea. Make sure you use a low setting, and he’ll still respond. Plus, say “NO” at the time you use it.

That is a tough one cause it is a terriers natural instinct to dig. I had a digger, but luckily she only dug one hole and kept at that one for years, after she died we just filled in the large hole.

Build him his own sandbox in your backyard and make it enticing to dig in and encourage him to dig there. Bury things in there for him to find. Terriers were bred to dig and this is the most enticing game you could ever give him. This actually works and will save the rest of your yard.
Please don’t use shock collars. They are inhumane. If he fights with other dogs, avoid dog parks and work with a professional trainer that specializes in gentle training methods for dealing with aggression.

i had a client with a jack russel who was a monk, he thought it woudl be a good idea to get one scince the origanator of the breed was a monk, by 8 months the other monks were making him get rid of the dog for digging and barking and being not nice overall, i sugested they get a kiddy pool or two and fill them with gravel, dirt rocks, sand and DOG TREATS, bones, biscuits, toys anything he might like, and to switch it up
when they caught him digging anywhere else they put him in his diggging spots and gave him a treat as soon as his feet touched it,
it took a few weeks, but they have a much better relationship now and he looooves his digging boxes
