Training Collar Guide: Pick the training collar that best suits your pet

I want to buy a bark control collar for my dog, but?

My b/f thinks it will stop our dog from barking all the time. He wants her to bark in case someone is trying to come in the house or other reasons where she may need to bark.

Has anyone experienced this? Can you train the dog to not bark only at certain times?

She constanly barks at night while we’re sleeping because she hears other animals or rodents.
With either the shock or the spray.. will she learn that she can not bark when the collar is on her and that’s it’s ok to bark when it’s not on her? Sorry if my question was confusing.
I’m not looking to hurt my dog and I will certainly try it on myself before her.

  • You will probably find that in a very short period of time your dog will become "collar wise" and know that when the collar is on that it can’t bark, but that it can bark when the collar is taken off.
With my crowd all I do is stick my head out the door and say "I’ll get the collar" and they quiet down.

  • Let’s see – the civilized and compassionate rule is, don’t do anything to your dog that would hurt you — so, first try the shock collar on yourself, if you like it – put it on your dog.

    Fair and simple.

  • Yes, you can train them without a bark collar. There is a product called bitter apple that you can buy at your local petstore that helps with that. When they bark and they are not supposed to you simply spray once in their mouth and scold them. It isn’t harmful just gives a bad taste. It works well as long as you are consistent

  • there are bark collars you can get that spray citrus at them and they cant stand it, so i suggest going with that.

to train your dog to be quiet at night, put a normal collar on during the day and the bark collar at night.

eventually they stop barking during the night but will realize they can during the day

  • i would get the spray collar. its great for night wear. and after a while they should stop all together with the unnecessary barking. you shoud know what kinda bark is what. i mean come on. a dog doesn’t need to bark. she just needs to be trained not to. somewhere along the lines when she was a puppy, it never got corrected so now she does it all the time. certain things i will let my dog bark at, but if i know its nothing i tell him to stop, he’ll try to growl a bit, and i just tell him no, if it keeps going, i will go over shut his mouth, and give him a firm tap on the nose and say no. after that he gets the idea.

  • its probably worth it to get the collar.
if the dog is really worried about a situation, it will bark. most of the time, it probably only barks for attention

  • I tried a type of bark collar (that emits an ultrasonic sound when they bark) on my barking dog but this had no effect. You can buy collars that spray water when the dog barks – that may work – I don’t think the collars are meant to be on all the time, I think they are supposed to be on only when you don’t want them to bark. The electric shock collars sound cruel to me so I don’t advise this.

Could you try dog training lessons instead?

  • You can’t have it both ways. You can train her to only bark at certain times. You will lose a little sleep because you have to do it directly and at the times she is barking but any good trainer can get you started. There is no such thing as a quick fix in dog behavior.

  • Get a shock collar you control so when the dog barks at something she’s not supposed to bark at shock her. But don’t shock her if there is someone/something they should bark at. If you don’t like the idea of shocking her every time then get one the beeps or vibrates. Those work just the same. My dog does the same thing and she’s a Dutch Shepard we just smack her nose and tell her NO very firmly or we put her in her cage for a while until she settles down.

  • Hello? Why would you wan’t to zap your dog because of it’s barking? That is loony! I have worked at many Good Shepard sites and they don’t zap dogs for barking. I mean geeze. Zapping your dog for doing something very natural. That is almost like telling you not to blink for the rest of your life, or telling you to stop your heart and keep living. I agree with the poster that said to put the collar on yourself and see if you like it. If you dont want it to bark give it to someone who can deal with it. I listen to over 50 dogs a day barking. I deal with it. I have 3 dogs of my own. They bark constantly I deal with it.

I swear they should make those zapping collars illegal. It is absolutly brutal.

  • Barking collars do not always work for all dogs we had one dog that liked it. your best bet is to take the time to correct the action. Is your dog outside at night alone? How old is your dog? What is the breed or mix of breeds? If your dog is alone it might just be lonely, Do you spend time one on one with your dog? If you routinely feed & water Your dog don’t you think it would reason that you should have a socalization time set. You have a routteen to get ready for bed you should give your dog one as well. With young pups it has been very benifical to take a T shirt that has been worn by the owner for a few days or nights in order to pick up the smell, tie it up in knotts & give it to the dog it works as a security blakket. With young pups who wine all night useing a tick tock clock mimmics it’s mothers heart beat so they can sleep peacefully. Some dogs must be moved. still others are just not suitted for it living where there is noise disturbance laws. Most dogs that have had any kind of trainning collars on know that when the collar is off they may go ahead & do what ever it was there to prevent them from doing. It is better to teach a simple one word ("Quite" ) Command to your dog then to go through the expence & time & possible falior of a bark collar.
