is using a shock collar to train your dog mean and cruel?
I told my parents that they should get a shock collor for the dog becouse it never listens to anyone. I don’t see anything wrong with it. You only give it 1 shock when it does something wrong. Its no different then spanking the dog if it does something wrong, I would think that would hurt more then a shock would. I heard people that have used it, and stand behind it. They say it works great.

Yes,very. How would you react if a dog wanted to be that to you. Just because you function more highly, it doesn’t mean you have the right to abuse things who don’t.

I personally believe that you shouldn’t train with any form of punishment. It has been proven that dogs will learn better on a rewards system. Training methods that utilze punishment have largely been replaced by "clicker training" it is a treat/rewards based system. Google it!
I personally feel that there is always an exception to the rule, but as far a normal training goes, I wouldn’t use a shock collar. I’d save that for SERIOUS problems that need be stopped IMMEDIATELY.
I’m sure other ppl will differ from this, but that is my stand on the issue.

um depending on what setting you have it on 1-6 or 1–whatever it is keep it on 1 if you have to use and truthfully it is way worse than a spank

In my opinion, YES it is cruel. You should never hit a dog or any animal for that matter. Training takes patience and kindness, take him to an obedience class and spend time with him. Like everything else in life you have to work to reap rewards, and he will too.

I belive shock collers are cruel but there are other options…… Choke coller, pinch coller, or slip coler. these work good but if ur dog has aggresion issues he may figure out that ur the one causeing in the pain when u pull on a pinch or choke coller and then go after u. in that case it would be good to use a shock coller because then he dosent know where it is coming from but i think that is the only situation where it would be good to use one.
Never just go straight to the shock coller.

I mean they are humaine but I think it is wrong and not a very good way to get best out the dog and if u are Not careful the dog could start biting. And there is better ways to train ur dog. Here are some web sites dean@ez-dog.com or http://www.aperfectdog.com it will teach u better ways to train ur dog.Because if U love the dog It would be really hard to see him get shocked lk that. NoW a hot wire fence thats a different story.lol

yes it is very cruel..and unnecessary…there are other ways to train animals that dont include shock collars and spankings..do an internet search on dog training techniques, there are tons of sites out there – positive reinforcement works a lot better than negative..and your parents will have a happier dog too.

Well, I think that it is kind of weird for people to think it is cruel to punish dogs by shock collars, and to compare dogs to children. Dogs are animals, God made dogs to make us happy and God made people to tell His word. There is a difference. Humans are over dogs, and I believe that you should do whatever you can to get your dog to obey you.

I think if you have tried everything else they are a great tool!!! Some people believe it to be cruel but the best thing for the dog is to be obedient and listen!! Hitting your dog can lead to aggression and submissiveness. With the shock collar they don’t know that you are the one admitting the shocks all they know is that that hurt and whatever they were dong they aren’t going to want to do again!

some say it isn’t. but what do you think ?…. ethically i believe it’s wrong. the way i see it … your dog can be trained via language.. not yelling excessively.. but the right tone. oh …. for example have you ever seen the dog whisperer? he clearly demonstrates how an animal should be trained. in addition … your body language and the energy he gets from you … anger , sadness pain etc. is what the dog will feel and develop it’s reactions and behavior on. have you ever been sad and you realize the dog may appear sad too … or even try to come over for a pet? it because he senses your reaction and behaves accordingly. it varies to the personality of the dog.remember it’s a another living, breathing creature like yourself. also if you browse the ASPCA website you will notice it is considered a form of cruelty to animals.

Depending on the dog. Some dogs that have been abused yelling and spanking are not going to work they make even attack you. A shock collar used correctly can be a very effective way of training it should only take a few days,ex,,if they are leaving the yard a simple shock a few times they try should stop the behavior after a few days. Alot of people dont believe in this but anything used incorrectly of course is inhumane..
if you feel it would work best id say try it.Its better to try than to have a dog that could injure itself or someone else.

I think it is really cruel & I think you should take the collar off & break it & curse it to hell !!! nah im just kidding.. but if you used it give your dog A butt load of treats to make up for the shockage >.< i dont think YOU are cruel but the people who made the thing should be locked in prison for life & who cares if your dog doesnt listen my dog runs around every when & when i throw a ball she just takes it & runs away >.< hehe in a while you dog might get use to you training her or him i dont know the gender of your dog so hehe & the word IT is for dead things or things that dont move …sorry if this is too much writing

I would ordinarily say yes, that’s cruel, but it depends on the dog…
I used to have a lab (Known for their high pain tolerance…). No training worked on the dog – He flunked out of obedience class, he annoyance barked, nothing worked on him, until I tried a shock collar.
I didn’t use it for very long, but it got the message across and he was a great dog for 12 years. If he ever started up the annoyance barking again, all I had to do was show him the collar and he stopped.

Shock collars are never used by people with the intelligence to actually train their dogs. But then, they don’t resort to spanking their dogs either because they know that dogs don’t learn anything except fear and not to trust people from this kind of treatment. If that’s what you have to resort to, you do not deserve a dog.

Shock Collar Abuse and Accident -Trainer’s Eye Witness Account
A local trainer was doing shock collar demos at a pet expo where my club was doing clicker and agility demos. She was using her 5 month old Jack Russell Terrier (JRT) as the demo dog.
The puppy got out of her crate when this trainer left her booth, and ran loose around the expo. A friend of mine caught the puppy and was carrying it around looking for the trainer. My friend noticed that the puppy shook hard in her arms intermittently. my friend then noticed that when the puppy shook, the red light on her collar was on. The trainer was trying to find her puppy by shocking it as a cue to recall.
The next year, at the same pet expo, we had another shock training demo. after the demo, the trainer was taking his two GSD’s outside and the collar broke on one of them. the entire audience saw this happen.
The collar was burning the dog and would not turn off. the dog was screaming at the top of its lungs and bolted for the open exit door. The trainer was shouting at him to SIT! SIT! while he was trying to turn off the collar with his remote, and he couldn’t turn it off. The dog was screaming and running. and the other German Shepherd was in a total panic because he was off leash and was trying to stay in heel position with the trainer who was running after the other dog. This trainer had walked his dogs all around the expo off-leash and would shock them if they got out of position. Finally the trainer caught up to the screaming dog and grabbed the collar and literally ripped it off the dog’s neck while continuing to yell SIT!
I realized I was crying and holding my Sheltie/Border collie/Jack Russell Snap, who only weighs 20 pounds, really tight against my chest as if to protect him. and I yelled really loud, "I guess electricity doesn’t always work to train dogs! That’s a shock!" A bunch of people laughed.
Later I was mortified that I lost it and behaved unprofessionally. But the image of those two Shepherds is burned into my mind, many months later. my heart is beating faster as I relive this, actually.

Shock collars are the lazy way out. So is spanking. Train your dog with positive reinforcement.
