Training Collar Guide: Pick the training collar that best suits your pet

Opinions on using a shock collar on my 3 week pregnant dog?

Lilli O asked:

I have an extremely disobedient and loud 9 month old Rottweiler x Dobermen. I caught her mating with the neighbors Irish Setter x Beagle when she was on her 7th day of heat and again on the 15th day. She is gaining weight and her ******* are enlarged. I have used a shock collar on her before but I’m conserend if I should do it while she is pregnant. I need to use it on her because the neighbors are thretening to call the humane society if she doesn’t shut up. She is a outside only dog and I don’t plan to change that any time soon – no matter what. What suggestions do you have for me if a shock collar is not meaned to use on pregnant dogs. Can I even use a low shock one or are all shock collars on the no list while she is pregnant? What about when she is giving birth and when the pups are weaning? I don’t want her inside at any time and I don’t want her puppies inside. I just don’t.

Please no rude answers. I have tried training her but she is so stupid it’s embaressing to take her.
Actually, I have a few more questions about the genetic side of dog breeding. My dog is a black and tan dog with a white spot on her shoulder. The neigbors dog is red/tan/white. What color should the puppies be? My neighbors dog has elbow dessplaysia, whatever that is, is it serious to my pups or my dog? Will it harm them? And, my dog is extremely timid and can be very boysturous (sp?) and loud. My neighbors dog is slightly aggressive and can be very disobedient and cruel to children. As in, their dog has threatened to bite another baby.
I have tried the citrus thing but Chelsea doesn’t react to it. She tries to lick it and she goes mental over it. I prefer to use the shock collars as it gives a better reaction and is a better training method for dogs like Chel.
I don’t want to spay her yet because I just got a Germen Shepard x MinPin that I want to breed her with because they are all Germen breeds. I want to try create a new breed but this pregnancy was a throw back. She is still young. I didn’t want to breed her until her second or third period because I read on a website that it’s harmful.

I DO NOT WANT TO SPAY/NEUTER BECAUSE I BELEIVE IT IS MEAN AND WRONG. I ALSO WANT TO MAKE MONEY SO BREEDING IS A GOOD CHOICE FOR ME. I don’t care what your “theries” on spaying and fixing dogs – I don’t wwant to!
ROLLS EYES.

I can’t use anything else. Nothing works! She is so stupid. She will make a huge fuss if I take her to obedient training and spay bottles and citrus just makes her go crazy and she starts jumping everywhere and growling at me. Shock collars are the only things that work for her. I am going to try sell the babies but if I can’t I will just give them away or dump the runt lol just joking. I want to keep a girl to breed. The rest I will try sell when they are like 4 weeks old so that they are cute. I got chelsea when she was 5 weeks old and i got my boy, Sam, when he was 7 weeks old. They are so much cuter as babies. It’s too hard to get rid of them when they are like 8 weeks old.

We have a collar that sprays cirtus spray in the dogs face when they bark. Not it the eyes or anything, but towards the nose. It does not hurt them, just gives them a wiff of the spray. It goes around the neck and worked great, apparently dogs **** the smell of citrus fruits.

  • Karie

Please get her spayed in the future, to prevent any other pregnancies. You should consult a vet about the shock collar though. Only they would know if it’d cause any complications.

If she’s early enough in the pregnancy, you can get her spayed, and not worry.

  • Jennette

I **** the thought of a shock collar on an animal. Honestly, it sounds like you haven’t bonded with that dog. A dog needs to be inside with you whenever they want to be. Being with you is their greatest desire. My daughter has a 11 yr old, male Rott. He’s always been with her…inside or outside. The bond is strong so he knows what pleases her which makes him obey very well. He never barks excessively. He’d rather be with his owner instead of wasting time barking outside.

  • Idella

Well…. dogs are quick learners. A few times after my dog had her collar on, she didn’t bark anymore. So a couple shocks woudn’t hurt I don’t think… you might catch her doing this tho: My dog actually figured out how to bark quietly.. not loud enough to activate the collar but not quiet enough u coudn’t hear her. It was halarious to watch… What do you plan on doing with her puppies?? I would run a free add in the paper and then get her fixed. Humane societies are bombarded with puppies/kittens caused by negligence. It’s genocide. Good luck!

  • Bennie

I don’t think you should you should use a shock collar on her while pregnant..It could cause her to go into early labor or something and it could result in her death. Tell the neighbors that it ***** for them they have to put up with it for a while. When she is nursing the puppies the shock my cause her to kill her puppies…I’m not n expert but that seems like a logical theory.

  • Aletha

ahhhh! i was considering using a shock collar for my disobediant min pin for his barking until i found a different technique..i use a spray bottle with water in it whenever he acts up i usually just ****** it into his eyes ..I have the nozzle of the bottle adjusted to spray right in between his eyes ..this method is a topper from any other i’ve tried please pleaes don’t use a shock collar try this first

  • Annetta

Wait, the neighbors dog has threatened to bite a baby?Like verbal threat? Cool!*lol*

In all seriousness, don’t use the electric shock collar. Go for the citronella collar. You will have faster results that way. It will only take one time if it is positioned right and you won’t have to worry about the side effects on the pups.

When she does have the pups, take them to the humane society when they are 8 weeks old. They will find homes for them and you won’t have to worry about having them hang around. Then you can get back to training with her.

Just to warn you – it is illegal in most states to sell or trade or give any pup away that is under 7 weeks of age. If you do, I certainly hope you get fined for each and every pup that you give away at that age.

I was trying to answer you earlier nicely but you really are a butthead. Why are you trying to create a new breed but you are asking questions on genetics of dogs on Yahoo???? You seriously need a lobotomy.

  • Marcene

I’ll make it pretty simple for you, if you were pregnant would you want a shock collar around your neck?? You are sick if you actually go through with that idiotic idea…and I hope you are a dog in your next life as punishment. Disgusting.

  • Lili

;-{} There should be no reason to use some shock collar on an animal that you claim as a pet !! & pregnant should tell you automaticaly that’s a No’,N`o’,!! & dangerous!! Think about the pups first !!-[good luck] `’R”r,r`r’r,r`,r’,r.’.->

Does the phrase Like Owner Like Dog mean anything to you? You should be so ashamed of yourself, I don’t have words. My only miniscule hope is that you are one of these posters who just write in crazy stuff to get to people – if you are – congratulations, mission accomplished.

Let’s get one thing straight – your dog is NOT stupid. Dogs that are disobidient, loud and “stupid” are simply not handled right by their owners, either due to ignorance or laziness. I’m inclined to assume the latter since your poor “outside only” dog is first of all not spayed, got out to mate with another dog – not once, but TWICE while in heat. I’m sorry – the stupid one in this picture is not your dog.

Suck up the embarrassment and take her to obedience classes, and get her spayed at the vet as soon as the puppies are born – you might want to consider doing it before they are born – It may seem cruel, but when you know there are serious health concerns with at least one of the parents, and you know how many dogs die miserably in shelters, it may be better for them, and it’s ridiculous to allow these two animals to breed. (And since you failed to spay your dog, and failed to keep her enclosed – TWICE – while in heat, I use the word ‘allow’.)

Forget the collar and give your dog the stimulation, training and attention she needs. Now.

Edit: Ok, Min-Pin/Shepherd Mix – this is complete and utter stupidity (as is our inclination to answer this individual)…..

  • Lela

People like you are what’s wrong with this world.
If you think you’re going to make money, you’re stupid. You don’t know anything about breeding, but that won’t stop you.

German breeds. I have never heard anything so dumb!!!

You are the reason millions of animals die in shelters. I hope your proud of yourself, PUPPY KILLER!!

For every pup you breed and find a home for, that’s one more shelter pup that dies homeless.

Not that you care. Just as long as you can make money on your poor dog, that’s all you care about.

    Jerk.

  • Son

Before you get a dog you should consider, having puppies and such.
    you must be very irresponcible,
she is still a puppy herself and now she is having puppies!
how do you expect the puppies to live outside?
the need warmth and extra attention just like human babies and how will you pay for their needles, worming and food if you don’t have that much money it is extremeley expensive to breed dogs unless you do it irrisponcibly and what if her birth is complicated? you could lose her and all of her puppies lives.
Do no use the shock collar on her it will give her added stress on top of the babies and next time make sure she can’t get to the neighbours dog!

  • Rosario

well, maybe it’s not that she’s stupid, its just that you’re not confident in her. dogs really do pick up on their owners’ emotions. the shock collar may not be a bad idea on a very low setting, but just make it so that she doesn’t start yelping and going crazy. that will not be good for her puppies or you. you will definitely HAVE TO have her inside while the puppies are young and helpless, and maybe if you just can’t stand your dog that much, you should find her a different owner. and maybe you should try to find out what in the world she is barking at. it may be something that you can help with. i don’t mean to be mean or anything, but if you really didn’t want her inside you should have not let her mate with the neighbor’s dog and gotten her spayed when you had the chance. now you are definitely stuck with the puppies and the task of finding homes for all of them because you are the one with the female dog. you should take her to the vet, find out how many you are going to have, and discuss what you can do about not bringing her inside your house with your vet. there are many options you can choose from including givining her up and letting the humane society or the SPCA deal with her and her pups, letting the humane society have the pups to take care of and you getting your dog back, fixed, and with no further problems at all cost to you, or you take care of your dog and have her puppies and have fun with them, and find homes for all of them. ok? you have to deal with it because it is your dog. we blame you for your dog. the law blames you for your dog’s actions just like they would blame you for your children. discuss the options with your vet and then decide what you will do.

  • Jani

Maybe you should give the dog to someone who has the patience to raise her properly. Do not complain about the dog being “disobedient and a loud mouth” when obviously you have not worked enough with her.
Dogs are not meant to be a baby making machine to line the inside of your wallet, but they are to companions to people.
I hope your neighbors turn you in to the humane society, as you obviously are not responsible or mature enough to handle a dog!

  • Rick

I would really, really just call and ask the vet about the shock collar. It would be awesome if you can use it and not worry, but more likely than not the vet is going to say no, it’s not safe.

How big is your yard? If Chelsea doesn’t have enough room to play she might get restless. I have a 10 or 11 month old puppy and she gets really restless when she doesn’t get enough excercize. Maybe you could walk your dog once or even twice daily to help get her energy out. If you already walk her daily, you could increase the length and pace of the walk to try to wear her out. Takes some of your time I know, but it’s worth it to take good care of your dog.

There’s something else you could try. There is a natural supplement called Rescue Remedy that you can get at any health food store. It’s basically flower extracts distilled in alcohol, and the brand is Bach Flower Remedies. It comes with a dropper inside, and people are supposed to take a few drops on the tongue. It basically just calms your nerves if you’re feeling anxious, or can help you fall to sleep if you’re restless. Doctors give it to pregnant women and newborn babies, so I’m sure it’s fine for a pregnant dog. I give it to my dog when she’s super hyper and we’re going to bed, and she quiets right down. Might be worth a try!

    Good luck with your pup!

Shock Collars are INHUMANE, so try placing a muzzle on her instead. The most the Humane Society will tell you is to muzzle her, or tell your neighbors to put plugs in their ears, and She is NOT STUPID, you just need to train her with patience because some dogs are slow learners and it depends on how you train her. She needs love and attention. Barking at night is normal as cats’ meowing all night. But you can learn how to teach her to deter some of her barking. For starters, you know that she is communicating with all the other dogs in town: as well as your foolish neighbors that think that you can control all the barking your precious dog is doing. She needs to carry conversation with all those dogs out there and I bet she was barking at your neighbors’ dog more and their dog, surely, must have been conversing/barking also but they do not hear him nd you are too tired from work to hear him either. You do not need to keep her inside nor have her whelping inside your home if she is and has been doing fine. I have a 7 year old German Shepherd that can carry on a lengthy conversation most of the night, no one has complained, rather, the neighbors are glad she does so that any possible robbers are deterred from that area due to the dog. I knock on the wall loud so she will hear; she stops, or call out to her to stop. It did not work right away, but it worked after quite a while, without any harsh means. I would **** to have anything around my neck giving me horrible shock just, or even a muzzle, because I wanted to carry a conversation with my friends, would you?

Puppies (because your 9 month old dog still is a puppy) bark and disobey because they’re lonely and they aren’t trained to do otherwise. If she’s an outdoor dog and if she disobeys as much as you say, I’m guessing you don’t spend much time with her. You obviously don’t want to take the time to train her to behave properly, and you say she causes you embarrassment. Why do you have a dog? They don’t stay puppies forever; you’ll have her for the next ten or fifteen years. If you want a good dog, you have to put in the time and effort to train it to be so.

Repetition is the key. She might not be a genius, but she still wants to please. Take her to an obedience class, and they’ll teach you how to train her, and make sure you work on it with her at home. Then you’ve solved the barking problem and won’t need a shock collar, which probably would be bad for the puppies.

As for the puppies, take your dog to the vet and ask your vet about them. You might quickly change your mind about turning your dog into a breeding ground. You’ll have to keep them indoors until they’re old enough to go outside, pay for shots and vet bills, and they take a lot of time and effort to raise. They’ll need to stay with their mother for at least 8 weeks, despite what you’d like.

As your dogs are mixed-breeds, they will (most likely) never be recognized as a new breed. Also, you might be dreaming of lots of extra cash, but puppies cost a lot of money in vet bills, shots, and food, and you can’t expect to be able to sell them for the prices pure breeds or specialty breeds go for. Your dog is a mutt (and there is nothing wrong with that; I have one myself), and I would guess that most people looking for a mixed-breed puppy will go to a shelter, not a classified ad.

Really, I recommend taking your dog to the vet and discussing your options. Tell him or her what your plans are for your dog, and ask about how to train them properly. They’ll be able to give you better advice than we could. Then please listen to it.

*ETA* Also, it’s actually pretty gross when a dog gives birth. Expect a lot of icky goo, lots of mess, no sleep, and to have to cut cords, tie them off, clean the puppies, and maybe assist with the birth. If you don’t want to help with that, I’d get your dog spayed.

  • Lori

If you don’t know what should dysplasia is, you should not be allowed to even breed a poor, innocent dog. And spay and neuter is cruel? No, cruelty is contributing to the dog overpopulation problem, so more and more dogs can be killed at shelters. Cruelty is allowing your dog to breed with a dog that has should dysplasia, so her puppies can have the same problem.
And no, don’t use a shock collar on a pregnant dogl. That only makes more problems then there already will be.
I think it is time for someone to call animal control……..

  • Valda

I really think you need to find the animal a new home, you have no business breeding her no way. You sound like you have no knowledge of dogs let alone breeding. So do yourself a favor and the poor dogs and find her a new home.

  • Eddie

O.K. You should not put a shock color on the dog. You should take the dog to obedience training and bring it in the house and spend some time with it. WHY do you have a dog any way? To keep in the yard and shock it when it acts up? The dog needs to be socialized. Would you like to be in a yard all day with no one to interact with a? Of course the dog barks what else does it have to do? A Rottweiler needs to be Exercised, it also needs a leader. The dog is not stupid it is in huge need of a leader. Any dog can be trained if you take the role of leader.
