Training Collar Guide: Pick the training collar that best suits your pet

Pit Bull in our neighborhood kills cats, squirrles, chipmonks. What is next?

Question by Linda O: Pit Bull in our neighborhood kills cats, squirrles, chipmonks. What is next?

I alreay called animal control. Unless the dog isloose, legally there is nothing one can do. From a humane standpoint, i am going to notify all the neighbors through our Home Owners Association Newsletter, warning them, a mean dog “willing to kill” lives in our midst. Also, I am going to notify the vet of this dog, letting him know that we very upset about this situation. I understand the “fence” rule and that the cats should have been kept inside, but how on earth can a neighbor not understand that these were beloved pets with every right to enjoy the sun and fresh air? There is no “fence” on the bad Karma this neighbor and dog are creating! I do not understand how a neighbor can justify keeping a dog that clearly has no regard for other animals. The OWNERS clearly have no regard for their neighbors pets or the small critters that live in this area, as well. While, I don’t really want the dog put down. I think it is very unkind judgment to keep a dog that will kill any little dog, cat, or other animal that gets into their yard…much more a small child! I just wonder how do they sleep at night knowing their dog kills!!! Not all dogs are like this!!! I am heartbroken at our loss.

  • This situation is very unfortunate, perhaps both owners of the pets should take responsibility to supervise their pets when outside….

  • talk to the owner and if they refuse to do anything take them to court and if necessary put it to sleep that should teach them to train there dogs to behave .

  • Hello Linda,

well first of all this is not a question, its a rant by a hysterical women who just assumes we all know everything going on in her neighborhood. You are part of the problem and not the solution, you are part of the whole “pit bulls are evil” crowd when 99.9% of these cases are owner issues.

From first reading I would say thats the case here, but from what sense i can make of your rant, what ever animal this dog has hurt or killed was in the dogs area where according to your own account was fenced. Pits are instinctively very loyal and protective of their areas, but this kind of stuff happens everyday with almost all breeds of dogs not just a “pit”.

They have been majorly demonized by uniformed hysterical folks like yourself as well as major negative press. Are their crazy pits out there, sure just like their are unstable dogs and cats everywhere, but for the most part a pit when paired with a good responsible owner is one of the best family dogs out there.

I own 13 cats, 2 chihuahua’s, pekinese, small terrier mutt and yes a pit. Racer (pit) as all my animals are rescue dogs / cats and he was tortured and abused trying to get him to fight. My sister knew this person through another friend and after a frank discussion I had with the owner I came home with the dog.

All I knew was all I heard from the news and so on and I was extremely concerned for my guys as well as my wife and myself.

After working with Racer for only 2 weeks he basically stopped all aggressive behavior and now 2 years later he is absolutely the best dog I have ever owned hands down and his best friend is my Siamese cat Squeeks who sleeps with him curled under his belly.

Please take a huge chill pill and address the real possible problem here and that sounds like the owner, not the dog. The dog simply followed instinct like pretty much all dogs not just pits.

And Messykat, you are a snob and not a help. I have read other posts of yours and you have no clue what you are saying half the time.

  • I’d call the cops and ask what you can do, since animal control can’t seize the dog unless he’s offleash. However, I’m another one who would never let my yorkie or my cats outside (except the yorkie on a leash). It’s just not safe, and wild pit bulls are only one of the things that can get to them.

  • In this day & age why are you letting your animals out unsupervised? You are just as much at fault as the dog owner. This is a case of two irresponsible owners.

  • Keep your cats indoors. Or offer to get a kennel to contain the pit bull, one that is metal and is assembled next to the house (they come in pre-formed sections from any hardware or farm store). Report to the police as well—but the fact that the dog is on his owners property says the law is on the owner’s side here.

See if your city clerk has any ordinances against pit bull dogs or dogs that have knowingly killed several pets. Most cities have ordinances that say the dog has to be muzzled while outdoors even on their own property, or that the dog is to be put down as a danger.

  • Unfortunately, unless there is an attack on a child or animal (pet) outside the property of the owner, then it simply becomes your opinion and legally there is little that can be done.

They probably have no problem sleeping at night, since they have a completely different perspective.

The only thing you might do is see if your local government has specific rules regarding pit bull terriers and if the neighbor is adhering to those rules.

  • First of all, it is important to remember that just because some Pit Bulls are are animal aggressive, it DOES NOT mean that they are people aggressive. As a matter of fact, Pit Bulls used to be called the nanny dog because they are so gentle with human children. They are one of the most loyal and eager to please dog breeds. Independent temperament testing shows that you are far more likely to get bitten by a Golden Retriever than a pit bull. Research the breed and don’t fall for the media frenzy to demonize these creatures. Many breeds of dogs are inclined to kill smaller animals, not just Pit Bulls.

And, I am glad to hear that you know the cats should have been kept inside. If you want to your cats to enjoy the outdoors, build them a cattery. Domestic cats that are left outside to roam kill lots of wildlife themselves. They are not native to this country and kill even when they are not hungry. And, being outside is dangerous for them! I am a cat lover myself, but that Pit Bull is entitled to be outside in a fenced area. I know that cats like to be outside, but mine are only outside on a leash or enclosed area. We have lots of Quail in our area who would like to live without being killed by a cat. Why should the Pit Bull be killed because irresponsible pet owners allow their dogs and cats to run free???? You say that you don’t think the dog should be killed but yet the neighbors shouldn’t have him, either. What do you think will happen to this dog if he is given up? Keep control of your pets and keep them safe and don’t blame the dog.
