The Golden Retriever, with its intelligence and eager to please attitude, is one of the most popular breeds in the United States according to AKC registration statistics. The working ability that has made the Golden Retriever such a useful hunting companion also make him an ideal guide, assistance and search and rescue dog. The golden-colored coat is the hallmark of this versatile breed, and can range from light to dark gold.

The Golden Retriever is a lovable, well-mannered, intelligent dog with a great charm. These dogs are easily trained, and always patient and gentle with children. Loyal, confident, sweet and eager to please. It is an active, loving and outstanding family dog. Golden Retrievers enjoy pleasing their masters, so obedience training can be fun. They excel in obedience competitions. Friendly with everyone, including other dogs, the Golden Retriever has very little, if any, guarding instincts.

While unlikely to attack, Goldens make good watchdogs, loudly signaling a stranger’s approach.

You need to be sure to maintain this dogs firm, but calm and confident, consistent pack leader demeanor to avoid behavioral issues. Some of the Golden’s talents are hunting, tracking, retrieving, narcotics detection, agility, competitive obedience, and performing tricks. These dogs also love to swim.

All these attributes of the Golden Retriever make it one of the most sought after dogs. It is quite a pleasure to own one of these absolutely beautiful dogs. A companion that you will cherish at your side on walks, and a nice companion on those cold rainy days just being inside.

The care and love of this animal does take some special caring, however.
