Training Collar Guide: Pick the training collar that best suits your pet

Training Collar: Temporary use only?

amartinez8420 asked:

I have a 1 year old Lab who weighs about 90 lbs and is full of energy so i take him on a 50 minute walk a day (2 if i have the day off) he’s goesnt pull much unless we pass other dogs, then he starts getting agitated and trys to get as close to them as possible. so i bought a training collar with a a choke chain back. should i use it everytime we go walking or only until he stops pulling?

Personally I would Never ever use such force on my animals .. but if you must use it , only use it till he learns not to pull like that anymore :(

It isn’t the colar that will train him, it’s you. I suggest having someone do mulitple exercises with you. Maybe have a friend take her dog for a walk with you and your dog. And when your dog tries to go after the other dog (even in curiosity), correct him. Tell him no and make him sit. Puppies are easily distracted so you may have to do this for a month or so before he completely gets the picture.

I assume when you say “training collar” that you mean a pinch or prong collar. This type of collar should be used every time you go for a walk. If he doesn’t need it, great – but if he does, you already have it on.

You should also use some positive motivation when on your walks. Keep some small treats in your pocket and give them to your dog when he is paying attention to you, especially when there are other dogs around. Set him up. Walk him buy a dog, if he tries to lunge towards the other dog, give him a good pop with the collar. If he is good, reward him with praise and a treat. This, in time, will actually train your dog to look at you when he comes across another dog.

    Good luck!
