Training Collar Guide: Pick the training collar that best suits your pet

What should I do and is there a vibrating collar?

Question by Jackie: What should I do and is there a vibrating collar?

Well I am getting tired of arguing with my dad, he is so impatient. Even with dog training! So my dog keeps barking and he is sick of it. He complains that “why don’t you just get him a shock collar” I am not that kind of person! I love animals more then anything and I wouldn’t even hurt a bug, so how could he expect me to get my dog Toto to have a shock collar! I told him that dogs could have a heart attack if put on a high shock, even leave a mark! He just can’t face the facts! It’s just he makes me so mad at times I JUST CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE! So he wants Toto to stop barking and I don’t want to use anything that would hurt my dog. So is there a vibrate ONLY collar and are they safe and will they not hurt dogs?
I have tested one before, I wanted to make sure it was safe and yea it burns.
I have said I didn’t want to hurt toto many times, all he does is argue and I don’t want to argue anymore. Just sick of it.

it’s much cheaper to train it than to buy that expensive contraption.

  • A shock collar on a low setting would basically feel like a small vibration.

Have you ever felt one? They actually don’t hurt–just make sure you’re using a good brand and you know what you’re doing.

  • i dont think so but if you want your dad to stop worrying then say that you dont want to hurt Toto

  • There are vibrating collars made for deaf dogs. There are three types of bark collars: electric, sonic and citronella. The citronella collars work best, they just spritz a little faintly orange-y mist at the dog when it barks. You need to refill the collars fairly often so be sure to get extra cans of citronella spray made for use with your collar.

I have found the sonic collars to be absolutely useless. The electric shock collars are too cruel. NONE of these collars TEACH a dog not to bark; they only work while the collar is on & filled or charged up. You can find citronella collars at http://www.petedge.com (Pet Edge) for what is probably the best price.

Some people think citronella collars are cruel. I don’t. I have eaten oranges, tangerines and other citrus fruits that have a much stronger scent than the citronella does and my dogs never ran from it or even walked away. They did come over to see what I was eating, and to sniff it, briefly, which tells me that citronella is probably somewhat unpleasant to dog but not horribly so. And the collars work well.

To teach your dog to stop barking on command or cue, you either need to hire a clicker trainer or become a clicker trainer yourself. You can find clicker trainers (hopefully near your home) if you go to Karen Pryor’s website, http://www.clickertraining.com and click the link that says “Find a Trainer.” Directions for teaching a dog to stop barking on cue are also at the website but can be hard to find. It would probably be better for you to work with an experienced clicker trainer until you learn to do it yourself.

  • You have not tested one. It does not burn. Further, there is absolutely no reason to tolerate obsessive barking.

Vibrate only is ridiculous. Buy a reputable no-bark collar and your dog will get corrected for barking a couple of times, rather than nagged by your vibration hundreds of times without learning anything.
