Training Collar Guide: Pick the training collar that best suits your pet

Would you ever use a shock, choke, or pinch collar on your dog?

I have been looking at how different trainers train dogs. Some use the harsh and painful looking shock collars. Others use choke or pinch collars. Some trainers refuse to use any of those collars. Would you ever use these collars on your dogs? Would you ever let a trainer use these collars?

  • I have
    What about it?

  • no i actually like my dog

  • Shock Collar – Yes
    Choke Collar – Maybe
    Pinch Collar – Maybe

  • If you know how to properly use the trainng tools, they can be effective if not they can cause trachea damage. They are not harmful as they look, I use a choke and a martingale for my ridgeback/whippet.

  • no i wouldn’t want someone choking me, so why would i let someone choke my best friend?

  • Hell to the no.

Your dog should be a companion, not a submissive.

Plus, would you like someone to shock, pinch or choke your neck?

  • I use a shock collar on my dog for reasons that only i need to know about there is nothing harsh and painful about them if they are used properly and a good trainer will have no hesitation in using one but Define a Dog trainer for me there are Cesar milan wannabes and then there are the real dog trainers of the world

  • No. Never. Absolutely not. Such tactics cause dogs to obey due to fear of punishment. I do not wish for my dogs to ever perceive me as a threat. The results are sometimes slower without the use of these techniques. I believe my canine friends should submit to my commands due to recognizing me as Alpha and respecting my position rather than being afraid of punishment.

… and if anyone ever put that on MY dog, they may be faced with a violent response … from me.

  • If I was in a situation/had a dog that required the use of those tools then yes I would. Why? because i am smart enough to realize that a tool is just that a TOOL. If you don’t know how to use it properly you won’t get anywhere and that positive reinforcement cannot be used for every single little thing.

  • I would use none of those collars…………also the majority of dog training clubs in the UK will not allow choke collars to be used and haven’t for the last 15-20 years……no I would never allow any trainer to use these on my dogs

  • NOOOOO!!!!!!!! that is horible! :(

  • Yes, yes, and yes.

HOWEVER they can be widely misused by some people.

Used properly they are and effective training tool.

Different tools work differently on each dog. Every dog and every situation is different. I would, however, be wary of a dog trainer who automatically grabbed for any of these tools without assessing the dog and the situation first. Like I said, there is a time and a place. I wouldn’t use a shock collar on my 17lb dog, but I would on my 120lb dog. Again, it depends on the dog, the owner, and the situation.

BTW, I have tried shock collars on myself. It definitely isn’t pleasant, but it isn’t painful either. The better the collar, the more consistent the shocks are. The one I have has a multitude of different settings and a buzz feature. I only have to use the buzz feature now.

Bring on my TD’s I suppose.

  • I personally wouldn’t but in the case of a strong dog pulling, if a couple of sharp jerks on the leash don’t seem to be working then i find pinch collars do the trick. But only for training purposes and only on the bigger more aggressive type dogs.

  • I would never use these types of collars on my dog and if I found out my dog trainer was using or planing on using these I would fire them immediately unlike other people who use these I love my dog. I believe in positive reinforcement( giving them treats when they follow a command, petting them and praising them) these work very well if you use them properly.

  • My dogs normally don’t wear a collar, but when they do it is usually a choke collar. Used correctly, there is nothing wrong with it. I find it convenient to put on and take off, as it just slips over the head.

I have used a pinch/prong collar in the past, and I still own one even though my current dogs don’t need it. I would use it if appropriate.

A shock collar is also a useful tool, when used properly.

  • Shock collars No. And pinch or choke collars yes but they have only been affective on some situations when training a dog on a leash or using them if you have a problem with your dog breaking a collar, chain or leash.

  • Shock collars, choke or pinch collars are only training tools, it is up to the human to use them properly and not abuse them.

I have no problem with any of those collars when used correctly. I have in the past, trained a dog on a choke collar..that was the way dogs were trained back then. If I need to use a training collar, I actually prefer a pinch over a choke.

I would not hesitate to use any of these collars, if I believed the dog needed it. Many people who have labs use shock collars on their dogs to teach them to retreive and take direction from far distances. When used properly, the tool is not the issue.

Currently, I have one dog who has never needed anything more than a buckle collar. The other, sometimes needs a little reinforcement and so, I occasionally use a prong on her.

  • I have used all three over the years. None have any dangers to them if used properly.

All my dogs can and do work off lead eventually in obedience, water rescue, sheep herding, etc.

Anybody who is a real trainer has a wide variety of tools at his or her disposal. A real trainer is not a "one trick pony".

  • Of course I would! If I met a trainer who opposed using these tools I would laugh in their face and roll the other way.

  • Well, your dog = your best friends or family!! Will you use shock, choke, or pinch collar to your best friends or family? I guess not! I won’t recommend people to use these kind of things to train dog, because you don’t need to.

I understand that many people didn’t have patience to train their dog or they will give up very easily during the training session — the reason is because they didn’t have a full understanding on how to train their dogs properly!

Training a dog is actually like building a relationship with him or her, and it is actually a very fun thing to do if you know what you are doing! Recently, a friend of mine setup a blog on dog training and they teach people how to train their dog in fun and easy steps… if you or your friends didn’t have a clue how to train their puppy, check this out and you will know that you really don’t need to use any of those shock, choke, or pinch collar at all!

    Hope this helps!

  • When my dog was younger he would run into the street. We tried all the training methods we knew of but nothing would work. One day his collar broke and he ran off and almost got hit by a car. After that, we realized he might not live the next time he did that, so we got a shock collar. He didn’t even notice the shock until we set it to level seven. We shocked him with it less than ten times and now he doesn’t cross the street without us.
